Feature Artist at Julie's:
Laura Winn Kane
June 3 - August 5, 2007

Laura Winn Kane is originally from Liverpool, NY - a suburb of Syracuse. The artist holds a BA in Drawing and Painting from the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, NY and a MFA in Painting from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. She has been living in Centre County with her husband, Tom since 1995 and currently maintains a studio in State College, PA.

The bulk of Laura's current studio work involves oil paintings and pastels of still-life themes. The artist insists on working from life as opposed to photos as she finds this method invigorating in both its immediacy and intimacy. Her goal is to investigate the relationships between individual subjects and their surroundings - sometimes emphasizing the equal importance of these components. The objects depicted are from the artist's collection of decorative and utilitarian items. Color and pattern play important roles. Often the objects within the picture are treated like stage performers in a tableau scene. The artist wishes to inspire viewers to consider and appreciate the simple beauty that surrounds us each day - whether it is found upon a dining room table or an office desk.

Laura is an active member of the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania, where she coordinates weekly drawing sessions, mentors high school students interested in the arts and serves on its board. Her memberships also include the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society, the Art Association of Harrisburg, and Art In Common. The artist's work has been exhibited and won awards both regionally and nationally. Her paintings were included in the prestigious Biennial 2006 at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Loretto, PA and the Cooperstown National 2006 in Cooperstown, NY where she won the Windsor & Newton Award for Oil Painting. Currently, one of her paintings will be displayed at the State Museum in Harrisburg, PA as part of Art of the State: Pennsylvania 2007 through September 9th. Additional information and examples of Laura's work may be found on the web at www.winnkaneart.com.

•  Art by Theresa Crowley Spitler  •
Beginning October 17, 2006

Theresa Crowley Spitler lives in Montoursville, PA. After a career in teaching she now spends much of her time creating art. The artist works almost exclusively in pastel, painting landscapes and still lifes. She also enjoys doing portraits in charcoal and graphite.

Theresa finds inspiration in the everyday objects she includes in her still-life paintings. She often receives special requests from her patrons to include their personal mementos in a still-life arrangement that will become an original painting. Her travels influence her landscapes and she frequently paints on location.

According to the artist, "When painting landscapes my objective is not in recording where I've been. I'm interested in creating a place I want to be. I look at art not so much as self expression but self exploration. Art is a gift, not merely talent or ability, with a the passion to create it, the determination to pursue it, and an ability to appreciate that art is all
around us."

Theresa has shown her work and won awards in juried exhibitions. She is a member of various art organizations including the Bald Eagle Art League and the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society. The artist participates in painting classes and teaches workshops in pastel painting at the Lycoming Art Students League in Loyalsock, PA. Her work is in private collections and can be seen in various galleries throughout Pennsylvania, including the Gifts of Art in Williamsport, the Out of the Blue Gallery in Lewisburg, and The Gallery at Katie's in Muncy Valley.

•  Watercolor Landscapes by Ed Steinhilper  •
August 13 - October 16, 2006

Ed Steinhilper is a watercolorist who describes himself as a "wet 'n wet"
landscape painter.  Using predominately primary colors and a broad brush,
the paper becomes the palette as paint washes mix into luminous hues and
transparent vibrancy.  After extensive preparation, Ed paints quickly and
with sureness that superbly captures a moment of light on a snowy day or a
summer evening of stretching shadows.  His work is more than visual.  In his
watercolor of a winter forest scene, you can hear the thud of wet snow
falling from a pine bough onto the warming earth below.  His creations
reflect his passion for art, painting and the land.

A graduate of the Pittsburgh Art Institute, Ed is a juried member of the
Pittsburgh Watercolor Society.  He has studied with several noted watercolor
painters including Carlton Plumer and Tony VanHasselt and is featured in the
book "Artist's Secrets to Painting Tonal Values" published by the North
Light Book Club.

Since the mid-seventies, Ed has lectured, demonstrated and taught,
introducing many students to the art of painting.  Ed is presently Director
of The Lycoming Art Students' League in Montoursville, PA where people who
yearn to express themselves find an inspirational and knowledgeable teacher.
Several area galleries and many private collections feature his work as
well.

•  Land And Sea From Here To Ireland  •
Paintings by Michelle Montes
June 12 - August 13, 2006

Michelle Montes grew up on a small farm, and has always had an appreciation for landscape and an extreme concern for its conservation for future generations.  In the 19th century many American artists became extremely concerned about this as well.  They had started painting from locations of land resources that were still uninhabited in our great country.  While many Americans during that time were concerned with taking European vacations, American artists were saying, "Vacation here! Look what we have.  Europeans may have old architecture, but we at least still have land, trees, and God-given beauty that can not be matched anywhere else."

The artist and her husband travel extensively, and in their travels have noticed the constant depletion of land throughout every country they've visited.  Michelle grows increasingly concerned with new construction and society's expansions.  As she travels, she has started recording any landscape that still has a sense of its original nature - a beauty for each
of us to remember.  Her goal is to record as much of it now as possible least future generations not have accessibility to what was.  For the future she believes we will have depleted resources so much that livestock will be raised on the tops of high-rises and the original natural landscapes will be viewed via images on television screens.

"Many of my latest paintings depict the sea and landscapes from here to Ireland.  I believe that as so many of our ancestors crossed the ocean and fell in love with land as if it were their native land, we too should love and respect it.  Hold it dear, because future generations deserve our respect."

Ali Mirsky - Mosaics Demonstration

Friday, May 5, 2006
11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

******

•  Ali Mirsky - Mosaics
April 9 - June 11, 2006

"My work represents the energy that emerges from color and texture. My designs are largely spontaneous and my pieces are created directly onto the substrate allowing the mosaic to transpire naturally. All of my mosaics are unique and designed to appeal to the different style and needs of each buyer.  I create one of kind pieces for homes, offices, or public spaces fusing the world of art with function."

Ali Mirsky studied Fiber Art in college and worked for several years as a production weaver in Arizona and North Carolina. After moving to State College she became the art teacher for State College Friends School. While teaching the 8th grade art class, Ali had the idea of creating a mosaic on top of an old wooden table. It was soon after that Ali began to feel the desire to learn more about mosaics. After a workshop and some beginner projects, Ali knew that she could no longer weave for she had found her true calling. Unlike weaving, mosaic art gives the artist the freedom to express herself through the use of color and texture. Ali Mirsky brings a fresh upbeat energy into the world of mosaics. Her passion and understanding of mosaics is continuing to unfold with every new creation. Her use of color is bold and evokes feelings of happiness and playfulness. Ali has successfully bridged the gap between art and function with her mirrors, tables, and bathroom/kitchen installations. Her capabilities are made endless with the help of her husband Steven Mirsky, who works in his wood shop to custom cut and build all of Ali's frames and surfaces. With Steven's help, Ali continues to provide custom work for clients and galleries throughout the United States.  The artist will also be participating in the 40th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College July 12-16, 2006.

Additional examples of her work may be viewed online at www.alimirskymosaics.com.

•  A Bridge Photo Essay by Kathy Marie Kolb
June 13 - August 7, 2005

Kathy Marie Kolb Railroad PhotoKathy Marie Kolb's Bridge Photo Essay tries to show, visibly, the interplay of three major elements in a single location in North Central Pennsylvania; the East side of Penny Hill, Susquehanna River (West Branch) and the Norfolk-Southern railroad bridge there.  Kolb has observed this one location at different times over a 30 year period. The photos show the trio in various seasons at various times of day from different angles.  The actual bridge is old, rusty and ragged. Yet in certain lights at times can look pleasing. The bridge looks aged and scared, yet is much younger than the river or mountain.  Only a few of the pictures were taken when trains were on the bridge.  Most of the time the bridge stands waiting.  The Bridge essay was partly inspired by the book "Everyday Sacred: A Woman's Journey Home" by Sue Bender.

Susman teaches classes about poverty as well as traveling with the Bucknell Brigade annually to Nicaragua to help out with a free clinic for residents there.
The Heifer Project is where people buy animals and they are given to a low-income family who then is taught how to take care of the animal, and reaps the profits from it (they get the milk from a cow, etc.) along with helping them become self-reliant. When the animal reproduces, its offspring is given to another family.
"My excitement and concern for world issues has encouraged me to work to open doors for others to understand some of the hopeless problems that plague our world," Campbell said. When we start educating ourselves, and work together, these hopeless problems become positive changes."
Campbell, a double major in commercial design and photography, and is "interested in anything that I can do to encourage students and community members to become active citizens."
This is the first year for Lycoming to bring this program about, and the first time for Campbell as well. It has been going on around the country since 1990.
All participants will receive a ceramic bowl to remember the evening.
"We're hoping to get 50 participants," Campbell said.
Tickets are $10 and are available in Pennington Lounge from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Tickets and information are available by contacting Campbell at ext. 4400, or by e-mailing camkath@lycoming.edu. Local artists are encouraged to donate ceramic bowls for this event.
"We've got a solid 15 bowls so far. If anyone is interested in donating bowls, it would be greatly appreciated," Campbell said. More information also can be found at www.emptybowls.net and www.heifer.org.
